WINEMAKER’S NOTES

The color of ripe cranberries. The nose is dripping with garden-ripened strawberries and raspberries, fresh plums, and subtle notes of green tea leaves, baby bella mushrooms, and butterscotch. The mouthfeel of the wine is extraordinary, with dense, ripe fruit, supple tannin, and refreshing acidity. A delicious and classic Oregon Pinot Noir from the terrific 2023 vintage!

Vintage Notes: What a vintage! While our farming efforts are never “easy,” 2023 proved to be as close to that as it gets. A late bud-break due to a stubborn winter led to a very late kick-off to the green season in April. It’s a good thing we received ample winter precipitation, as the summer growing season was drier than normal. The dry weather relieved any mildew pressure we usually battle here in the Willamette. The summer was simply delightful with highs in the 80’s nearly all summer. We finished up our harvest right before the first rains came in late September. The 2023’s exhibit incredible color, beautiful aromatics, and fantastic acidity. It’s early, but it might be my favorite vintage we’ve had of Toil. It’s at least right up there with my current favorite, 2015!

CRITICAL ACCLAIM

95 pts - Owen Bargreen

The 2023 TOIL Pinot Noir was stored in a small amount of French oak barriques prior to bottling. Like the ’22 edition, the ’23 is a dizzying rendition that is already beautifully evolved. Once on the nose this takes on layers of blood orange zest, diatomaceous earth, red raspberry compote and suggestions of black licorice that all take shape in the glass. The palate is full-bodied and broad-shouldered, showing off the heat of the vintage. Marvelously salty, showing great tension, depth, and texture, enjoy this beautiful wine now and over the next fifteen-plus years to come. Drink 2025-2039

8 Wonderful Oregon Wines - Wine Spectator; Tim Fish (login required)

Tightly wound at this point and focused, with deep yet rich flavors of raspberry, mineral, forest floor and dusky spices that build tension and tannins toward the firm finish. Hands off for now. Best from 2026 through 2033. 891 cases made.—T.F.
